How To Stop Windshield Cracks From Spreading?

Ever faced windshield crack? well, it can happen anywhere, anytime. Besides obstructing the view while driving, this can spread to other parts of the glass if not tended to at right time. The driver’s safety must be considered as the most important aspect in view of operating a vehicle.

Go through the following guide and know how a windshield works, who is at fault, what are the precautions you can take to stop the crack from spreading.

How Does The Auto-Glass Of Your Car Work?

The windshield can withstand a lot but it shouldn't be considered invincible. It has a very strong coating which maintains the stability and also strong enough to hold the pieces together even when hitting hard forcefully. Auto glass or windshields are manufactured with great intelligence and even after they are hit by a rock the pieces do not shatter and the coating plays its role to keep them together, saving the driver. You should always get it fixed as soon as possible. The crack is permeable for fog, water and even dust particles. You can fix it by using some DIY tips but if it spreads then you have to rush to Hyundai windshield repair service centre or whatever car brand you have.

Products To Stop The Spread

75% of the car’s stability is accounted for by the glass. Hence, repair and maintenance of every delicate part of the car have to be taken seriously. Many products guarantee delay of the crack but not every solution is up to the mark. You will get mixed reviews of these products and some of them do not come with a guarantee. Always consider a direct purchase from the vendor or vehicle showroom for assured quality products and avoid third-party involvement.

Taking Help From Insurance Policy

For windshield cracks and faults, insurance companies have policies for replacement and repairs. Restoration is generally covered by insurance, but because the repair is usually less than the deductible, it likely won’t help you. If you did file this for restoration under insurance, it’s normally considered ‘no fault’. Contact your insurance agency for more clarity on this. For instance, if you have a Santro, it is better to contact the insurance company then splurging your money on a new Santro windshield glass price.

Small chips and cracks can be fixed easily, and it saves replacement cost. The driver can definitely use solutions epoxy or filler for repair as the chips do not spread easily. This is one of the easiest ways to save your money and get the job done. It has other aspects to be taken care of: if the crack is on the boundary rather than in the centre it would require more concentrated repair work. Consult an expert and you can also get help for larger cracks.

Choose High Quality Products For The Windshield

Regular maintenance of windshields keeps them clean and the visibility clear. Using high-quality products helps to reduce the need for the replacement and could help reduce the need for repairs as well. If you think the Alto LXI windshield price is high, it is best to invest in these products and avoid unnecessary repairs.

•The first product you must invest in is a glass cleaning fluid. Using dishwashing liquids and/or car shampoos could leave the car windscreen full of scratches. A car cleaning fluid is a specialized cleaner that gently washes away all the dust and grime from the windshield without damaging it.

•It is quite common to see vehicle owners using rags or regular towels to clean the car windshield. This is a great mistake as any piece of cloth, particularly a dusty one, can leave scratch marks on the glass surface. It is best to buy a special glass towel or a microfiber cloth that is specially made to clean glass.

•It is also important to keep a car glass spray handy. This helps in cleaning the windshield clean when you don’t want to go in for a wah. Remember that investing in these high-quality products is less than your Alto car glass price.

•A microfibre glass cleaning tool or wiper is handy for these times. This will help you reach every nook of the car glass without risking scratches or streaks.

•Dried bird droppings, spots of mud and dirt can be difficult to remove, particularly when they dry up. These can be easily removed (without scratching) by applying a dab of a spot remover and by wiping them with a glass towel.

•A spray of a high-quality rain repellent keeps the rainwater, dew, and mist off the screen. At the same time, it is important to take care that the car wipers are intact and not damaged due to wear and tear exposing the metal blades which may cause scratches on the windscreen.

•using a high-quality car polish helps in removing minor scratches and minor pitting damage. This will improve the clarity of the glass and keep the vision of the driver clear.

•Always remember to use a good car cover if you plan to go on a vacation or leave your car parked for a few days. This will keep the car windshield from collecting dust and the wipers from being damaged.

The Difference Between Tempered And Laminated Glass For Your Car

Most car owners understand the importance of replacing the car windshield promptly if extensive damage has been sustained. Very few, however, know the different kinds of glass that are used and can make an informed decision. Your Mahindra Xylo front windshield price may depend on the kind of glass that is used. It is important to know the difference between the two kinds of glass that are commonly used in cars – tempered glass and laminated glass.

Decades ago when plain glass sheets were used in the early automobiles these were found to be vulnerable and shattered easily. They also left sharp shards that injured the occupants. The need for a tougher glass was keenly felt. Tempered glass was the first alternative to be considered.

Tempered glass is glass that has been toughened by the process of heating and quickly cooling again. A pre-cut sheet of glass is initially heated up to a temperature of about 649 degrees C. It is then quickly cooled through a process called quenching. When the glass undergoes quenching it becomes many times tougher than the original glass we started with. This is glass that does not easily shatter. Even in case of damage tempered glass breaks down into small rounded pieces that do not hurt the occupants of the car. Tempered glass is usually the first choice for car windows and is rarely used as a windshield.

Your Xylo front glass price may be attributed to the fact that car front windshields are usually made of laminated glass which is more expensive than tempered glass. Laminated glass or sandwiched glass is not one, but two or more layers of glass bonded together with a sheet of PVB in between the sheets. PVB or polyvinyl butyral is a kind of transparent resin. When the sheets of glass with the PVB between them is subjected to heat and high pressure, they blend in to form a single transparent sheet. As mentioned earlier, laminated glass is what goes into making car windshields. When a pebble or a hard object hits a laminated glass, it doesn’t shatter. Instead it develops cracks but is usually held in place by the resin in between. Even if it does shatter, the glass shards do not fly inwards. Instead the glass collapses on the bonnet and the occupants remain unharmed. It is best to pick an OEM laminated glass for your car windshield replacement.

Types Of Windshield Cracks You Should Be Aware Of

When it comes to taking care of your car’s windshield, it can be a tricky task given the sensitive nature of the glass. Cracks often form on the windshield owing to factors like pebbles and other sharp objects flying off the road and hitting the glass of the windshield. The impact can cause varying degrees of damage to the windshield, depending on which you can either choose glass repair or replacement.

To decide whether to go for glass repair or replacement, you need to be aware of different types of cracks that can form, depending on which you can decide which option you should choose. Usually, if the crack formed is under 6 inches, it can be repaired.
  1. Bull’s eyes: This type of crack is formed when the windshield is hit by a round stone or any other object. It has cone-like projection protruding out, which causes the glass to chip away. It is larger as compared to other types of cracks.
  2. Long Crack: A crack that spreads over more than 6 inches (15 cm) is a long crack. It is usually a serpentine crack across the windshield, which cannot usually be repaired and auto glass replacement is required.
  3. Stress crack: Such a crack forms without an external physical object hitting the windshield. It is usually caused due to variation in the temperature. Putting cool water on heated up glass during winters can be one reason for the crack to form. It usually starts from the edge of the windshield and forms a straight or bending line across.
  4. Half Moon: A half moon crack is more or less similar to a bull’s eye crack, but it differs in the sense that the cracks formed is not fully circular, more like a semi-circle, just like a half moon as the name suggests. It is mostly caused by stones.
  5. Stone Break: This crack is caused when a stone chips away at the glass. The crack can grow bigger over time if not repaired shortly.
  6. Floater Crack: Such a crack starts from the middle of the windshield (anywhere more than 2 inches from the edges) and then permeates to the sides.

To prevent severe damage to the windshield, quick action is required as soon as a crack is observed on the surface of the glass. Sometimes, owing to lack of initiative, a small, repairable crack can grow bigger and the only solution left is to replace the windshield, which costs more.
